About Rain & Your Wedding Day

Here is a little good to know post. They say that rain on your wedding day is a blessing and will bring you good luck but when you dream about your wedding, the last thing you probably want is RAIN. Most people associate rain with wet clothes, ruined hair and runny makeup….or worse yet being stuck inside a restaurant or hotel when you came to Belize for a tropical wedding.

Well…not from my point of view. For me, your wedding is YOUR day, no matter what the weather does. You dreamed about this probably since you were a kid and it will be one of the most important moments of your life. It would be a shame to allow the weather to ruin your big day.

Days are different in our lives, not because of the weather, but because of the memories we create. When you think back to a special time in your life, you don’t usually remember the weather first, you remember the moment.

One of my best Wedding Photos at Mayan Ruins is because of the dramatic sky. This photo would have a completely different flavor with a blue sky.

Dramatic Sky at Mayan Ruins

Bear in mind that when it is raining, the sky is different and gives so much flavor to our photos. Yes, we can go inside the restaurant or hotel and remain dry but better yet, we can have some really cool photos outside! The rain in Belize is usually on and off, so it is not impossible to photograph. If you prefer to stay dry we can just wait for the rain to take a break.

There is a wedding that I fondly remember particularly because of the weather. Tracy & Shawn (at Rojo Lounge) planned their wedding in February because at this time of year there is a much lower chance of rain. And… guess what?! You will never believe it but they had TROPICAL RAIN on their day! The rain began during their ceremony and then it started pouring just after. No wind at all, just raining cats and dog. Everyone was “OMG… this is terrible”…what now? I could see the mood started to lower and then I reminded myself that no matter what, this is their day and they will have these memories and photos of their wedding for the rest of their lives. So I asked them “How much do you care if get wet?” They both answered me, ”So long as it’s fun, we’re up for anything you have in mind”. Minutes later we had a photoshoot in the rain, the first dance in the rain and the entire wedding party (30 of them) joined us in the rain!  We enjoyed great music and had a fabulous time. I will never forget the happiness from that evening. I think this was one of the most fun weddings I have ever attended! Everyone loved it so much! And yes with TROPICAL RAIN!

If you want something different and unique, maybe you should even hope for rain, at least at the end of your day and of course with me as your photographer!! :)

All these photos were taken during 2010-2011 and I was not equipped or prepared for rain. Now, in my camera bag I have special accessories just in case it rains… and all I can tell you is that I am very excited to use them!

Don’t worry about things that are beyond your control, such as the weather. What really matters is that at the end of the day you’ll be married and will have amazing photos of your fabulous day…and maybe with a few extra blessings too!!

The way I see it, if you want the rainbow, you gotta put up with the rain.
Oli Rusu

p.s. As long you have a backup for staying dry, you’re “safe”.

About Photos: Prints & Digital Sizes

Here is a very important topic and really good to know for everyone.

As you might know, my photos are delivered as products (prints, albums, canvas…) and the digital size my clients get is not printable. Digital files of my packages are by default 600×400 (72dpi) or 800×600(72 dpi), for internet display, digital frames, i-pods, i-pads….

My digital files are available for purchase for a different price.

Frequent Questions

Here I’ll add time to time frequent questions that my future clients have before to secure their date:

How long does it take for the delivery of the images?

After your wedding, I’ll edit quick 10 photos (2-4 days) and send them via email to be able to share with your friends and family. I’ll also blog about your wedding and post first photos there. After that I’ll work on the rest and will take 3 to 8 weeks. Depends by your package.

Also what is the digital size? Is that a print?
Digital file is for electronic display only.  Photo can be viewed on elecronics: ipad, phone, computer…

Do you have any options for us to purchase a digital copy (CD/DVD) of the pictures we choose?
My work is not about the option of being duplicated. My work is creativity and I aim for the best photos you ever had.  In my price-list, at the end you have details about the digital files you get. Small size only, for internet display or digital display (Ipad, I-phones, digital frames…)
You’re paying me to create your images, rather than just take them and call it photojurnalistic. Almost all the photos you see on my website are created. Nothing is usually happening in the prefect way for a photo. Need to be created. And that’s the job you’re hiring me.

If is very important for you the high rez files, those are available for purchase start with $5000USD+.

Here is the reason why: http://www.oliverarusuphoto.com/blog/2011/06/about-my-pricesoffers

Can I see the books or products? (and of course, you’ll see them when we meet).

Yes: http://www.oliverarusuphoto.com/main.php#Portfolio/Products/Products/2

What are TRAVEL EXPENSEES? How much cost?

Because I am located on Ambergris Caye, if the event I’m photographing is on another area, there are additional expenses that need to be paid by my client.

Plane ticket, hotel (1 overnight), meals, car rental.

For an event in Cayo, travel expenses are around $500 USD. For Belize City, just the plane ticket round trip from San Pedro to Belize City and the hotel overnight if I need to photograph in the evening (last plane to San Pedro leave at 5:30 pm).

For an event in Placencia, travel expenses are around $400 USD.

Weddings in Rainy Season at Xunantunich, mayan site

“The overall climate of Belize can be described as sub-tropical. The humidity while high, is seldom oppressive for long and is most noticeable along the coast. The mean annual humidity is 83%, but many days the humidity is masked by the cooling sea breezes. The Belize coastal area is exposed to southeast tradewinds averaging 10-13 knots and attain an uncanny consistency during the month of July”.  For climate patterns by months, please visit here.

We have 2 seasons: Dry season (January-May) and Rainy season (June-December).

I had an unfortunate experience this week that I want to share with you. I prefer to make my customers aware of all possible scenarios and I always like to have a plan B in case of weather.
Now, what you read above about the weather is a broad generalization and there are of course exceptions. In fact the weather here more often follow the exceptions than the rules!  Although June – December is considered the rainy season, most days are filled with sunshine with little or no rain. Whilst January – May is the dry season, yet we had tropical rain for 14 hours straight one day in February. Of course this happened to be the same day I had a wedding to shoot! My bride and groom were fantastic and just adjusted to the weather. They had a dry ceremony and then enjoyed a wet photoshoot! The entire wedding party danced in the rain taking in the spirit of the day.

Back to this week. Tana & Travis decided to choose Belize as a Destination Wedding because of my photos at  the spectacular Mayan Temple, Xunantunich. Everything was planned and ready and I even mentioned to Tana that I wouldn’t  mind even if it rained a little. Of course, when it’s raining you can’t have a regular photoshoot. Everything is different but I was still aiming for a few shots. It never occurred to me that if it’s been raining heavily for several days, the river surrounding Xunantunich could be flooded and because there is a manual ferry it is not safe to pass (due to the height of the river and how fast it is flowing!). Based on this, the entire Mayan site was closed. Even if we found a way to cross the river, the site was still closed.
So the day before the wedding, I found out that the river and the Mayan site was closed. I spoke with Tana and Travis and they decided that they still wanted to get married that day and were open to my suggestions for an alternative location.
My Plan B was an alternative Mayan ruin Cahal Pech. This site is the closest one to Xunantunich (around 30 minutes) and it was open. But Tana and Travis told me that if not Xunantunich, they didn’t want another Mayan ruin. They were staying at one of the finest resorts in the country, so I suggested they have the wedding there. Our Mayan Temple Wedding became a Jungle Wedding! It was incredible! The ceremony was on the top of a hill and the view was spectacular with the Mayan Mountains in the backdrop. Following their ceremony they released Blue Morpho butterflies before heading to the butterfly farm for more photos. They finished off with a romantic picnic and horse ride. Their wedding was unique and truly amazing!

Anything can happen on your wedding day, but with a little flexibility, you will still have YOUR day!

Enjoy the first photos from Travis & Tana’s Wedding.

About me, my Prices/Offers

The purpose of this article is not to justify my fees, but to educate my future customers and to save time explaining about my price-list and offers to everyone who loves and appreciate my work.

It crossed my mind to post a question on my business facebook  page (Olivera Rusu Photography) about “What do you think I answer when someone is asking me why my fee is higher than everyone around? The answers I got, melted my heart. I got emotional when I read my fan’s answers…we think alike and this is making me really happy!

First answer on my facebook page was “because you’re the best”…

1. I’m not saying I’m the best or even near that, but I’m competent, and I provide my clients with results that leave them happy. I’m doing my best to exceed their expectations and many times I succeed. Yes, my customers choose me because they like my work and they hope the same results for them. “Best” is a relative term anyway. The guys on the American Photo top 10 are really amazing photographers…

I like classic photography. I take my time getting to meet my couples before weddings or photoshoots, I’m trying to get to know them, learn about their life and then I inject their personality in their photos. This is “the secret” of my work. My customers look their best, but they are still being THEMSELVES.

For me doesn’t really matter if is your wedding day, if is your birthday, or if you just want “every day” photos, if you’re a senior or if my customer is a 2 year old.  All my customers get the same attention and I care about each in same way.

One time I had a mom who told me “Oli, it’s ok.. Don’t really matter, she’s small… I just want some photos”. I told her “You choose me for my work and for the photos I create.  I’ll give your daughter the attention I give to a  bride and groom… she is very important for me and I’ll treat her the way she wants to dream”. My client was a 7 years old and she took it very seriously.  So did I.  I sent the  mom away as she interrupted us several times with directions. The results… I exceeded the girl’s expectations, and also the mom’s. This is the way I always treat my customers and that’s the difference, one way I am best.

2. I also use one of the best and most expensive equipment for best results. One of my lenses costs as much as all equipment used by others photographers around this area.  I have to charge more for this reason as well.

When I started photography, my husband told me that I should buy my equipment from the money I do from my photo-shoots. It took me 3 years to buy the equipment  I have now and I still have a few more lenses I want to buy.

3. I do not want the entire market. Instead to work on 5 photo-shoots, I prefer to have one and do it right. I only want that part of the market that appreciate my styles.

This is me… I create photos.  I don’t just snap photos. I don’t just take you around and tell you “do whatever you feel”. You hired me to make you look your best and if you’re not a natural in front of the camera, I’ll bring it out in you.  Even if my shots look spontaneous nothing is there by accident. I’m thinking about every little details and when I’m shooting a wedding, I design the album as I shoot…

4. Also, I invest in my education. I’m always trying to educate myself and learn new techniques. Last year I went to a workshop in USA with one of the top 5 photographers in the world. That was not cheap and I got no discount. Did not even cross my mind to ask for a discount. I appreciate the artist and  I have a great respect for his work.I won’t give you any numbers because numbers are relative, but I can tell you that everything I earned for the year went into paying for the workshop, and the results for the rest of the year showed that the workshop was worth every penny… and I want to continue to educate myself every year.

What I do have to tell you is that in the entire workshop group of 20 professional photographers, my prices were the lowest from far and my work compares very well with theirs.(Samira&Mark Wedding from Belize City, The Cave Photo-shoot, The Rain Wedding at Azul…  and everything is recent. I remember what I learn there every time I put my hand on my camera and I definitely plan to go and do it again.

5. Time is PRECIOUS and you can’t put a price on mine.   As you might know, I’m a wife and a mom. I also need to spend time with my family, time I’ll never get it back. I don’t want to be gone all the time and leave my boys alone.  I definitely need to organize my time the way I want.

6. And finally, but not at last, I post process all my photos. I edit every photo and that needs a lot of time for every detail. There is not enough to have a good equipment and a good eye. Photoshop give the last touch and feeling to the photo… Post processing is like salt for the food. Is actually another job that need to be made properly. I’ve spent a FEW YEARS learning how to do it correctly.

Someone on facebook said: “…everyone else does not charge enough, the photography does not quit when you put the lens down…it continues in your office…through editing, creativity and final product … you are not expensive when you place a value on your craft equal to that of your skills”

I want to go with a limited number of events/month and yes, so far, I can afford to be paid with $450 USD/1 hour. You might want to hurry to book before to raise my prices and change my offers.

I do not want to extend my business, I do not want to depend on someone else. I’m doing most of the weddings and editing by myself and I love the way I work.

Starting in January 2011, I stopped giving out the large digital files and in the future, I plan to have the wedding books included in the packages. My plan is to not be optional anymore so everyone who’s getting my services will get it complete. Also, I might not be available by the hour, but by the day and that will be more. But those are steps I’ll make in time… and everything depends by how busy I’ll be. I’ll blog about this subject, separate as is an entire story about the products I start to offer now.

I’ll have soon a sample of resorts shoot (complete, start with the rooms, restaurant, food, activities around the resort, stock photography from Belize), sunrise, sunsets, vacation photos… everything they can think of, I have in my price-offer. I probably need to spend at least a weekend at the resort.

So, any time someone is asking me for my price-list,  I strongly suggest to book as that might be the lowest price they’ll get.

I don’t know if you know, but I’m also working with hotels. Every hotel who’s giving me a job, get the best photos for advertising the resort and also my work. They don’t have to pay for the photos, unless they want them without my logo.

Facebook quotes on this subject and I can’t agree more:

“… it is a free market and they get what they pay for. Talent, increases prices; a photographer who is passionate about her work, increases prices; skill and vision, increases prices. Add that up and you are worth your price. Time is your only commodity and you can price your work based on demand. You simply leverage your commodity based on demand. I think that’s clear enough. It’s their choice. Your work speaks for itself.”

- “Well just be honest, you can not put a price on talent. You can make anyone famous, your photos are stories not just a snap shot”

- “…because you worth it!”

- “I can say that your pictures are authentic, real, abstract, creative, impressive, breath-taking like I’ve said before and one of a kind…”

- “…if you are going all the way to beautiful Belize and all the other costs of that trip and get married (you can’t redo your wedding) one should have this photographer who goes beyond the boring typical photos of a wedding and also includes the beauty of where one made their special day. simple.”

- “Supply and demand. If you’re totally busy you have to raise your prices till it levels off. Just business. But you probably say “you get what you pay for”.

- “You capture the true essence of the couple and the environment. Their natural beauty, their vibrancy, their mood, their spontaneity, their passion, their life, their emotions, their expressions, everything in a single photograph. You think outside the box and mass trends, instead you look for the simplicity of natural states. You have a keen eye for beauty and perfect moments, and as such capture it. They say a picture is worth a thousand words, obviously they haven’t seen your work, yours speaks volumes. You and your work is genuine and real, and your photos are not just pictures, they are works of art.”

- “my grandmother used to say  if you buy cheap, you get cheap. “

- “You can tell them your American/Canadian customers were thrilled how LOW your prices were compared to the rest of N.America! And then give them my name as a testiment to the value of your service!”

Colin Brown ” Honestly Oli, Rhonda and I didn’t know how your fees compared to others available there. We saw your work first, and just “knew” that it had to be you. Once we met, we knew for certain! It’s not about the money – it’s about the results. Wedding photography goes through fashion phases, where certain kinds of shots are popular, but I think you’re fresh enough, that you’re less influenced by popular trends, and more apt to seek a couple’s true and unique look. Thank you again for our wonderful photos!” (Colin & Rhonda Wedding, may 2011) -

One very important detail you need to know about me, and this strictly applies to me, I do not like to bargain my prices or my offers.
If someone can’t afford my prices, tell my your budget and I’ll be more than happy to try to help you stay within the budget.  If you try to bargain my price down I’ll feel that you don’t appreciate me and my work.  If you don’t appreciate it there’s no reason to take your photographs.   I won’t feel comfortable around that person and I’ll avoid working with them. It takes away from my creativity.

Just like Tony, a great professional photographer,  said on my facebook page, “my work has three characteristics – quality, time and cost – pick any two that are most important to you – the third will adjust accordingly”.

Thank you for taking an interest in my work and appreciating what I do!

And here only few of my favorite photos. If you want to see more, please visit my website.
